Best boutique shopping: Armitage Avenue
Shop til you drop
Whether you’re looking for a metallic pink leash, luxury bedding or designer clothes Armitage Avenue is the place to be seen.
It is a bastion of quaint independently-owned stores like Barker & Meowsky, 1003 W Armitage Ave, the supplies and toy store for the discerning animal companion in your life, which offers pet grooming, massage therapy, and even an on-site tailor for porky pugs and corpulent cats.
Then there is Faded Rose, 1017 W Armitage Ave, the upscale home and furnishing store for you and baby, a haven of soft floral bedding patterns, delicate linens and luxurious pillows.
Lori’s Designer Shoes, 824 W Armitage Ave, advertises itself as “The sole of Chicago” and some consider the 5,000-square-foot shop the best shoe store in the city. Lori’s is enough to drive any woman to the brink of shoe fetish insanity with the melodies of Diana Krall floating in the leather-infused air and hundreds of boxes of stilettos, kitten heals and knee-high boots to ogle.
A simple pink sheath marks the awning of Celeste Turner at 857 W Armitage Ave, but the designer-wear inside is far from simplistic. The store features the work of Nanette Lepore, Trin Turk and Shoshanna and has been featured in the pages of the fashion world’s holy book—InStyle.
But for those unable to afford Celeste’s $200 silk halters and $300 dresses, look no farther than McShane’s Exchange at 815 W Armitage Ave, where they offer Manolo Blahniks for less than $140 and Nicole Miller eyelet skirts for a paltry $50. It would be a fashion faux pas not to check it out.
